Welcome to Mugurameno Basic School Charitable Trust (MBSCT)
MBSCT was formed in December 2003 and is a UK registered charity (No. 1101231). The charity specifically targets the children and community of Mugurameno, Chirundu, Zambia, which is a rural district approximately 200 miles south of the capital Lusaka.
The trustees of MBSCT are of professional backgrounds including the world of Education, Investment Banking and Corporate Hospitality.
We are devoted to the advancement of education and good health in this area of Zambia.
Our Objectives are:
1. To listen to the needs of the children and staff at Mugurameno Basic School and Mugurameno Community School.
2. To advance the level of education for the children at Mugurameno Basic School and Mugurameno Community School by providing better facilities and much needed educational resources.
3. To understand what the community needs and to work with the community to empower themselves, to help make the changes, by providing them with the necessary equipment and resources.
4. To work with children in UK schools to help create awareness and understanding of the lives of the people living in rural Zambia.
Facts About Zambia
Zambia is a landlocked country in south-central Africa. It is surrounded by Angola, Zaire, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia. It was potentially one of the richest countries in Africa but now is the 4th poorest country in the world.
Zambia has a population of around 11 million and 68% of Zambia’s people live in poverty.
Life expectancy at birth is 37.5 years while in the UK it is 78.4 years.
The average daily income is 60p a day.
1 in 6 children die before their fifth birthday compared to 6 in every 1000 children in the UK.
16% of adults are infected with HIV and AIDS.
86% of children are currently enrolled in primary education compared with 62% in 1992, however, people still have to pay for basic health care and education.
